Real-world learning
This course will teach you up-to-date knowledge on prevalent subjects, including the challenges and opportunities with Australia’s political system, global social movements and critical areas such as immigration, welfare, and criminal justice.
You will build a peer and industry network from this course and can expect lively but respectful and interesting discussions with other students who are enthusiastic about social justice issues. The experts and industry leaders you will learn from are committed to helping shape your career in the direction of your passion.
In your third year you will gain real world experience within your capstone unit. You have a choice to undertake a justice professional placement, a professional placement in first nations justice sectors or work on a justice industry project. You can also choose to engage in real-world experience in an international context with the option to undertake a justice-related study tour overseas.
Explore this course
In the first year you will study core units to explore a range of subjects that will help you make an informed decision about what to specialise in. Build a solid foundation and learn about the justice sector, criminal justice system, justice and inequality, professional communication, and justice research methods.
From year two you will then begin to specialise in your policy, politics and social reform major.
You will dive deep into the dynamics of how governments wield power both in Australia and globally. Discover the rich history and operational intricacies of Australia's political institutions. Master the art of policy creation, ensuring fairness and strength in our institutions. Engage with critical issues (immigration, welfare, human rights, and criminal justice), and learn to drive meaningful reforms that prevent injustices.
You have the flexibility to then choose from a variety of different complementary study options including a second major or a mix of minor and unit options from other Bachelor of Justice topics or a university wide subject.
In your final year, you'll engage in two capstone units: one mandatory and one elective. The core unit, First Nations (In) Justice, delves into colonial history, examines the effects of crime and policing policies on First Nations people, and explores culturally safe approaches to achieving justice within these communities. For your second capstone unit, you have the option to undertake a professional justice work placement, participate in an international study tour with a focus on work-integrated learning, or immerse yourself in an Indigenous justice-focused organisation through a professional placement in the First Nations justice sector.
You will also complete QUT You units, an innovative new university-wide curriculum designed to prepare you for a rapidly changing future.
