You can be considered for entry based on work and life experience the year after you obtained an ATAR or complete year 12. If you have not obtained an ATAR or completed Year 12, you will be considered for entry when:

  • you are at least 18 years old by the first census date of your QUT study, and you have achieved studies or work experience acceptable to QUT, such as:
    • a completed Certificate III or higher qualification
    • studied at least 0.25 year of degree (or higher study)
    • have at least 0.5 year full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience
    • performing arts qualifications.

QTAC will calculate a selection rank for you based on your professional qualifications, paid employment or past school results.

You may also have selection ranks from your high school studies, VET study or higher education. Your past school and further study results and grade point average don’t expire - they can be used to gain entry to QUT in the future. We’ll generally use your best selection rank when considering your application.

For most of our courses, entry is based only on your past academic achievement, represented by your selection rank. Some courses have additional entry requirements. To see which courses you may be able to get into, use the past selection rank thresholds in your course information as a guide.

Assumed knowledge and prerequisites

Most of our courses have assumed knowledge, and our Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science Advanced (Honours) has prerequisites that must be met.

Find out more about assumed knowledge and prerequisites

Thresholds

Courses may be harder or easier to get into each year, depending on their popularity and how many places we have available - it's about supply and demand. Thresholds from previous years should be used as a guide only. Higher thresholds don't mean a course is more difficult.

We work out minimum thresholds based on the:

  • academic capability to succeed in tertiary studies
  • demand for places available within the course.

Offer guarantee

Most QUT courses across a range of study areas are guaranteed at certain ATAR or selection rank, so you can assess your eligibility for an offer as soon as you know your ATAR or selection rank.

Check if your course is included.

See the guaranteed offer ATAR/selection ranks

Employment experience

The skills and experience you’ve gained through paid work experience can be translated by QTAC into a selection rank (from 55.00-93.00, depending on your skill level and length of service). You’ll be allocated a selection rank based on the skill level associated with your employment and the length of time you were employed in that role. The work you’ve done does not necessarily have to be in an area related to your proposed field of study.

You need to have three years or more of work experience to get a selection rank suitable for entry to our courses. If you don’t have this level of work experience, you might like to consider the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) to improve your rank, or other study to give you a new selection rank.

Include your employment experience on your application if you've spent at least six months in full-time paid employment (or equivalent).

You'll need to provide an official statement from your employer confirming your employment.

Learn more at QTAC Employment Experience

Boost your selection rank with the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)

The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a multiple-choice aptitude test that allows you to demonstrate your potential for university study. You don't need knowledge in any particular subject areas to take the test.

The STAT can improve your selection ranks for:

We’ll only use your STAT results if it improves your selection rank. If you received a low result, you can sit the test again in the next admissions period (i.e., at the end of the year or mid-year).

To sit for the STAT you need to register with QTAC. They also run workshops to help you prepare for the test.

Entry with performance qualifications

For all other courses you can apply via ATAR / Selection rank or use work and life experience that includes performing arts qualifications.

The skills and experience you’ve gained through completing non-AQF Performing Arts qualifications can give you a selection rank for entry to our courses.  Your performing arts qualification can be translated into a QTAC into a selection rank (from 84.00-87.00, depending on your qualification).

As a guide, completed AMEB seventh and eighth grade study will receive a selection rank of 84.00. Higher selection ranks are possible with higher AMEB (or equivalent) studies. This course you apply for does not necessarily have to be in an area related to your performance qualification.

Can I use my work experience get into postgraduate studies?

If you’ve have relevant professional work experience you will be eligible for some QUT graduate certificates. For most postgraduate courses, places are not limited (ie selection ranks are not used) and if you meet the entry requirements you will get an offer.

Explore the study area you’re interested in and make sure you choose the right course for you.

Past school results

Your Year 12 results do not expire when you have finished at school and can be used to gain entry many years after they are awarded.

We recognise past Queensland (including OP results), interstate or overseas Year 12 results, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, Senior External Examination results, and some non-standard Year 12 qualifications including Accelerated Christian Education (ACE), some Rudolph Steiner Education schools and some home schooling.

If you have an ATAR then compare it with the current selection rank threshold as an ATAR and selection ranks are on the scale; e.g. an ATAR of 93.00 is equal to a selection rank of 93.00.

If you have a Tertiary Entrance (TE) score awarded between 1974 and 1991, you can calculate your selection rank by dividing the TE score by 10 and rounding down to the nearest whole number. For example, a TE score of 885 equals a selection rank of 88.50.

Look at the tables below to get an idea of how your results might be converted to a selection rank.

  • Where SAT-1 and ACT achievement tests have been taken more than once, the best results will be used.
  • Minimum of two and a maximum of 4 advanced placements (APs) may be used. The aggregate will be determined from the numerical values allocated to subjects where: A=5, B=4, C=3 (Pass), D=2, E=1. Where more than four APs have been taken, the aggregate will be determined using the best four results. Aggregate scores below 6 are not accepted.

  • Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) (Level H1=AS Level; Level H2=A Level)

Qualifications deemed to be comparable with GCE A Level where A is the maximum graded awarded (ie A* grade is not used) cannot be assessed on these schedules.

Advanced Level: ranks are calculated on the basis that A*=6, A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 and must include results in not more than three subjects at Advanced Level or the equivalent comprising a combination of Advanced, Advanced in Applied subjects, Advanced Subsidiary, and Advanced Subsidiary in Applied subjects.

Where results in the same subject are awarded at both Advanced and Advanced Subsidiary level, only one result in the subject will be counted in the aggregate, and this shall be the result that contributes the highest points value to the aggregate.

Advanced Subsidiary level results may be included in the aggregate and contribute the equivalent of half of a subject taken at Advanced Level A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5.

A Level in Applied subjects/AS Level in Applied subjects: ranks are calculated on the following basis:

  • A Level in Applied subjects (Double Award) [12 units]: the sum of the two letter grades where: A*=6, A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1.
  • A Level in Applied subjects [6 units]: A*=6, A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1.
  • AS Level in Applied subjects (Double Award) [6 units]: the sum of the two letter grades where A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5.

Cambridge Pre-U Short Courses (Languages) result may be included in the aggregate and contribute the equivalent of half of a subject taken at Principal Level D1,D2,D3=2.5, M1,M2=2, M3=1.5, P1=1, P2,P3=0.5.

Progression/Advanced Diploma award: These awards can only be assessed on Schedule S4023 where: A*=15, A=12.5, B=10, C=7.5, D=5, E=2.5.

Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE): ranks are calculated on the basis that A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5 and must include results in not more than six subjects.
