Why choose this course?

In the next 10 years Australia's public administration and safety sector is projected to double, creating a growing demand for graduates with Justice degrees.

If you like the idea of working with people and organisations in addressing social, psychological, and technological harms, the criminology and violence prevention major is for you. By studying criminology and violence prevention, you can work with people and communities to address harm, to help communities feel safe, or more specifically, prevent family violence and learn how to help stop the cycle of violence and coercive control.

This course equips you with key skills to work in both frontline roles and broader positions within the justice sector. On the front line, you might be interested in corrections, domestic and family violence, child protection, not-for-profit organisations or youth justice. Broader justice careers might include criminology, domestic and family policy, advocacy, and regulatory roles. Whatever path you choose, this major provides a solid foundation in criminology and violence prevention while allowing you the flexibility to tailor your degree to your passion.

Real-world learning

In this course, you'll work on real projects to learn about criminology and violence prevention through problem-solving, analysis, and applied computer skills that are relevant to the workplace.

This course will teach you up-to-date knowledge on prevalent subjects, including the role of technology in crime, and the latest developments in areas such as youth crime, domestic and family violence, as well as action and advocacy for child protection.

You will build a peer and industry network from this course and can expect lively but respectful and interesting discussions with other students who are enthusiastic about social justice issues. The experts and industry leaders you will learn from are committed to help shape your career in the direction of your passion.

You have the option to gain access to the best minds in the industry through work integrated learning and professional placements to get real-world experience, as part of this course.

What to expect

In the first year you will study core units to explore a range of subjects that will help you make an informed decision about what to specialise in. Build a solid foundation and learn about the justice sector, criminal justice system, justice and inequality, professional communication, and justice research methods.

From year two you will then begin to specialise in your criminology and violence prevention major. You will learn about how technology may be used to perpetrate crime and respond to crime problems, how to explain and prevent crime, causes and prevention of youth crime, action and advocacy for child protection, domestic and family violence as well as understanding trauma in criminology.

You have the flexibility to then choose from a variety of different complementary study options including a second major or a mix of minor and unit options from other bachelor of justice topics or a university wide subject.

If you have a keen interest in learning about forensic criminology, you can choose to study the forensic investigations and criminology minor combined with additional complementary units of your choice.

As part of your final year studies you will also work on two capstone units; one core and one of your choice. In the core unit, First Nations (In) Justice, you will explore colonial history, the impact of crime and policing policy on First Nations people, and culturally safe ways to achieve justice with First Nations communities. With your second capstone unit you can choose to go on a professional justice work placement, embark on an international study tour, or to embed yourself in an Indigenous justice-focused organisation.

You will also complete QUT You units, an innovative new university-wide curriculum designed to prepare you for a rapidly changing future.
