What to expect

In your first year, you’ll complete your common IT units, including an introduction to computer systems, learning design and software development principles, and developing databases. You’ll also learn programming principles.  

The Software Development Major consists of 72 credit points of compulsory units. The core units include Object-Oriented Programming and Design, Web Computing, Algorithms and Complexity, Agile Software Engineering, Cloud Computing, and Software Engineering for Enterprise Systems. 

Your final year is your opportunity to showcase your skills with a major project. Your project will be for a real-world client and will be unveiled at the IT and Games Showcase, held at the end of the year.

Graduates of this major are in high demand across every sector. You’ll be qualified for a wide range of roles including software developer, web developer, mobile app developer, front-end or back-end developer, or full-stack developer. You could also specialise as a QA engineer, DevOps engineer, security engineer, or game developer.  

As you gain experience, you may progress into project management, system architecture, or solution architecture roles. With leadership experience, career paths can lead to senior executive roles such as Chief Information Officer (CIO) or Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
