QUT AI & ML Society
'The world of AI and machine learning has always fascinated me, especially its ability to optimise systems and transform both digital and physical computing. That’s why I joined the QUT AI & ML Society as a founding member, creating a space for like-minded students to learn, connect, and explore emerging technologies. My research in quantum machine learning through QUT has shown me the wide-reaching impact of this field and I’m excited to see how these rapidly advancing technologies can create real-world impact and improve lives.'
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Robotics and AI
Turning real-world experience into impact
'During my internship with the BMW Innovation and Digitalisation team in Regensburg, Germany, I supported vehicle quality control and developed a PowerApps training tool to teach Six Sigma fundamentals, using internal data to help digitalise workflows across the plant. Managing my own projects and collaborating across teams showed me how machine learning and digital engineering can drive real impact in advanced manufacturing - an experience that reinforced my passion for building innovative, data-driven solutions.'

Why choose this course?
Machine learning engineer is the number one fastest growing job in Australia (LinkedIn, 2025) and one of the fastest growing jobs globally (World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report, 2025).
As AI becomes part of modern engineering, gain the skills to work with machine learning and help shape the next generation of technology. Machine Learning Systems is a rigorous engineering discipline focused on the stability, ethics, and operation of automated systems. You will learn how machine learning functions inside complex environments involving hardware, people, and safety-critical processes.
Gain hands-on experience in agentic and multimodal AI, multi-agent systems, and edge AI to design intelligent solutions for real-world engineering challenges.
Through industry-integrated projects, research placements, and capstone design experiences, you’ll apply your skills to real engineering challenges. QUT graduates are in high demand by leading organisations across advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure, defence, aerospace, biomedical technologies, smart transportation, and robotics – including partners such as BMW, Boeing, and Orica - where machine learning and automation are reshaping operations.
Explore this course
Machine learning engineers play a critical role in advancing artificial intelligence and automation across all fields of engineering. They are responsible for designing, developing and deploying machine learning models that continually operate and optimise processes.
You will become a versatile systems engineer, capable of bridging the gap between cutting-edge AI and real-world deployment – turning models into reliable, functioning engineering systems.
Unlike traditional AI or data science degrees, this major focuses on how machine learning operates within complex engineering system. Where models are integrated with sensors, hardware and infrastructure across the full lifecycle from design to deployment and operation.
Examples of real-world applications include the technologies that underpin autonomous vehicles, smart medical devices and wearable technologies, emergency and disaster response systems, autonomous transport, and smart energy grids.
Explore your options
Your engineering degree features common units in the first year that combine broad foundation principles with a wide range of major choices, giving you flexibility and options before you choose your career specialisation.
Students can add a Machine Learning Systems minor to their engineering degree and learn to apply machine learning in real engineering contexts. Build practical skills in data analysis, predictive modelling and AI system development, these capabilities are highly sought after across technology-driven industries. The Machine Learning Systems Minor consists of 48 credit points (4 units) of core Machine Learning Systems units.
Work Integrated Learning
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is part of the curriculum and is a core part of the component for all engineering students. WIL provides real-world experience while you study, so you graduate with a portfolio that demonstrates your skills and readiness for industry.
As part of your degree, you’ll complete at least 60 days of approved work experience in an engineering setting, working under the guidance of a Professional Engineer. You’ll start planning your Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities from your second year.
Once you’ve completed 192 credit points in your single degree, you’ll be eligible to undertake an engineering-related placement.
Careers and outcomes
Graduates are in high demand, with excellent salary prospects and career stability on offer from employers. Graduates will be equipped for roles across diverse sectors including aerospace, robotics, defence, transport, mining, healthcare, energy and advanced manufacturing.
This program also provides an excellent foundation for research pathways.
Professional recognition
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is accredited by Engineers Australia (EA). Provisional accreditation is being sought for the Machine Learning Systems major.
EA is a signatory to the Washington Accord, which permits graduates to work in various countries across the world. The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is recognised internationally in the engineering profession, giving our graduates more career opportunities overseas.
