Why study a Bachelor of Communication?

The QUT Bachelor of Communication enables you to harness the power of media and communication platforms for meaningful global impact across a range of professions and industries.  

From your first year, you’ll build essential skills that set you up for success in today’s media, communication, and digital industries. Through six core units, you’ll learn how to collaborate effectively, craft compelling written and visual communication, understand how media works, and explore how audiences think and behave.  

You’ll also develop strong digital and data literacy—skills that are in high demand across media, entertainment, news, and creative industries. 

These core units introduce you to the major ideas, tools, and ways of thinking that shape the communication field. You’ll gain confidence analysing complex information, understanding the cultural and technological forces behind media, and making ethical, informed decisions in an evolving digital world.  

Then by selecting a first major and complementary studies you can specialise with an in demand skill set employers a looking for.  

Real-world learning 

You’ll be working with industry experts as teachers, real-world clients providing briefs for assessment, and collaborating with other students as you will in the field. Along the way, you’ll learn from industry experts within the world-leading Digital Media Research Centre – QUT's home of groundbreaking insights and strategies in digital media and communications.  

Flexible course options

QUT lets you tailor your communication degree to suit your interests.  As part of your degree, you’ll undertake a communication first major: 

You can then add one of the following communication options to your studies:  

  • a second communication major from the above, OR  
  • two communication minors (shortened, condensed forms of studying majors) from: 
    • Strategic Communication   
    • News and Factual Media   
    • Media and Society  
    • Digital Media Analytics  
    • Social Media Strategy   

You may also choose to add a second major, minor or electives from across the university tailored to your interests

With a double degree, you'll gain an even broader range of skills and knowledge and greater career flexibility. You can study communication in a variety of double degree settings:
