QUT’s degree in sport and exercise science is one of the first university programs of its kind in Australia. It offers you a clear pathway to a career as accredited exercise scientist or accredited sports scientist.

QUT's new facilities include biomechanics and exercise physiology laboratories, and resistance/injury prevention laboratories. Here you will have access to the same technology that elite sporting teams and coaches use to analyse performance.

Sport and exercise classes are active and engaging. They will prepare you to put your knowledge into action on professional placement.

During this course you will complete 280 hours of professional placement. You could work with a variety of organisations including sporting associations, fitness centres, school coaching programs, strength and conditioning programs, academies of sport and related organisations. 

Placement lets you experience possible future careers. It will connect you with potential employers while you build your skills.

 Placement experiences may include:

  • performance analysis of elite athletes and sportspeople
  • strength and conditioning training
  • school coaching and talent development
  • corporate health.

What to expect

This course will set you up for an exciting career working in sports.

Your learning will take place in training gyms and sports fields. You’ll learn the theories behind safe movement and coaching and then apply that knowledge in practical classes.

Your first year of study will focus on an introduction to exercise science, anatomy, physiology and coaching. You will begin to apply this knowledge in a sport and exercise science context. Studies in exercise psychology, physical activity and health will round out your learning. 

During second year, you will continue learning core exercise science units including exercise physiology, motor control, skill acquisition and biomechanics. You will begin to develop a more holistic understanding of the profession. You’ll study related areas including food and nutrition. You will also explore research in exercise and movement science. 

Units in your final year concentrate on applied sport and exercise science. You'll develop a deep understanding of sports physiology, sports injury prevention and rehabilitation, sports psychology and performance analysis.

You'll have the option to choose a professional placement in a specific area of interest. This final placement will bring together the knowledge and experience you have developed.

Work Integrated Learning 

During this course you will complete 280 hours of professional placements. 

Placement experiences are structured to enable you to grow your skills and confidence. QUT staff will support you in your experiences, providing feedback and guidance.

Placement offers invaluable opportunities to connect with future employers. You'll also get a feel for the work you enjoy and the direction you want your career to take.

Careers and outcomes

Honours pathway

At the end of your second year you will have the option to apply for the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise (Honours).  

Studying honours involves completing a research project of your choosing. It will extend your knowledge of the field and give you a competitive edge when applying for jobs.

Entry into the program is competitive and based on grade point average.

Total course duration for the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science (Honours) is 4 years full time. On entry to honours you will retain all successfully completed credits from the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science.

Careers and outcomes

Sport and exercise science professionals use their knowledge of exercise and its effect on the body in a variety of careers.

You could work with athletes to improve strength and fitness. Work within sporting organisations to deliver performance analysis.

You could develop health testing and education programs to promote health and wellness. Graduates also work in sport and recreation services, and in the tourism, mining, military, and hospitality sectors. 

If you're interested in exploring new ideas in sport and exercise, consider a career in research. Your research could lead to developments that improve training methods. Your contributions could result in healthier communities and fitter, stronger athletes.

Professional recognition

This course is accredited with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and gives graduates professional recognition as an Accredited Exercise Scientist. 

Graduates seeking professional recognition as a Sports Scientist Level 1 will need to complete sport employment in order to meet ESSA requirements.
