They are often one of the first health professionals accessed for advice on medication, and play a major role as healthcare providers and educators to the community. More than ever, pharmacists are contributing to improved health care through their growing scope of services in both primary and secondary care, such as pharmacist vaccination services.

Our course reflects the complexity of pharmacy practice in the real world. Your studies will focus on priority clinical areas. You will learn from pharmacy experts with established careers in the pharmacy profession.

Each semester you will build on previous learning to develop a thorough understanding of the factors that can contribute to person-centred care.  

You will complete more than 500 hours of professional placement in this course. Placements start in the first semester of your second year and are completed in hospital and community pharmacy environments, and in emerging primary and secondary healthcare roles where pharmacists are increasingly being employed.

On campus you will develop your skills in modern scientific laboratories and simulation facilities that mimic an authentic pharmacy environment.

The honours component of the course offers you a competitive advantage in the workplace. You will be a critical thinker with a strong foundation in research and have advanced skills to become a leader in a profession where responsibilities, capabilities and scopes are expanding.

Your skills will be in demand as this course focuses on preparing for working in all aspects of the pharmacy profession.

Pharmacists are employed in a growing range of settings in both primary and secondary care including community pharmacies, general practice, aged care facilities, hospitals, industry, regulatory and research roles.

As the most accessible healthcare professional contacted for advice about health, pharmacists frequently play a major role in health education and promotions. Clinical pharmacists work closely with other healthcare professionals in a person-care role, to evaluate newly released medicines, coordinate clinical trials, or prepare medicines for patients requiring specialised treatments. You could work in:

  • Community pharmacy including business management and ownership
  • Primary care roles based in community or clinical settings, such as GP clinics, Aged care facilities
  • Hospital roles, including possible structured training residency programs and ongoing specialist roles in areas such as internal medicine and surgery, critical care, ambulatory care.

If you are driven to make a difference through research and discovery, we will prepare you for postgraduate studies in pharmacy-related areas. Our curriculum incorporates both theoretical and applied aspects of research, health promotion, and business directly associated with the pharmacy profession in Australia. If you’re passionate about research QUT can prepare you for a career as a pharmaceutical research scientist.

Professional recognition

This course is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council. Upon completion of an Australian Pharmacy Council accredited and Pharmacy Board of Australia approved program, graduates are required to complete the Pharmacy Board of Australia’s registration requirements to be eligible to apply for general pharmacist registration in Australia. Graduates are eligible for membership with a number of professional associations, including the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia.
