Why choose this course?
If you’re interested in healthcare but prefer to work behind the scenes, health information management (HIM) allows you to use analytical skills to improve systems and help people in meaningful ways. This is a career that requires attention to detail as well as clear communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. HIM professionals interact with people across diverse healthcare settings and disciplines, including doctors and other clinical staff, health service managers, health departments, statistical agencies, insurance companies and patients.
QUT offers the only HIM course in Queensland. Our course responds to the key health challenges of the information age. Digital systems, electronic health records, and the management of information requirements are being rapidly updated across the spectrum of health care. Data from these systems is increasingly used as evidence for decision making, requiring leadership in data analysis. You will learn the importance of health information being collected, analysed and communicated in ways that are secure, efficient and ethical.
During this course you’ll visit health information managers at major hospitals, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations to gain insight into the diversity of available roles, and valuable networking opportunities. You’ll develop confidence and industry experience through placements.
Health information managers are well suited to leadership roles because they understand clinical practices, finance functions, information technology applications and staff management. QUT will support you to develop and expand your leadership and management capabilities. The combination of knowledge across business, information technology and health will prepare you for many roles.

Health units will develop knowledge in medical terminology, the Australian healthcare system, clinical classifications and casemix management.
Through studies in health informatics, management, data analytics and clinical information about diseases and procedures, graduates have a wide variety of career opportunities across the health sector
- managing comprehensive patient information
- implementing and managing digital health systems
