Bachelor of Science

Your skills in effective communication will give you an advantage within your chosen science career. Due to the growing demand for science communicators, you may expect a range of employment opportunities within the public and private sector. Science requires writers who can frame scientific knowledge and debates for broad public consumption.

Major in biological sciences, chemistry, Earth science, environmental science or physics with your Bachelor of Science, and get real-world experience through our Vacation Research program.

Bachelor of Communication (Journalism)

The landscape of factual media has undergone a profound transformation in the digital era. New actors and outlets have entered the public sphere, and audience expectations about who to trust have changed dramatically. Factual storytellers must adapt status quo approaches to produce truthful, accurate material more quickly and for more platforms than ever before.  

This major prepares you for a dynamic career in factual writing whether you are covering global affairs, hosting a criminal investigations podcast, or drafting social media posts. You will learn fundamental concepts like fairness and accuracy, as well as pioneering skills in multimedia production, data-driven storytelling, and reporting for social justice.

Details and units

To successfully complete ID11 Bachelor of Communication/Bachelor of Science, students are required to complete 384 credit points comprised of 180 credit points from the Bachelor of Communication program, 180 credit points from the Bachelor of Science program, and 24 credit points of QUT You. You will undertake both degree components concurrently.

Communication component:

  • Six core units - 72 credit points
  • A Communication major - 96 credit points
  • One Communication Unit Option - 12 credit points

Bachelor of Science (Study Area A) component:

  • 54 credit points of core units;
  • 6 credit points selected from the Maths Core Unit Options List;
  • 120 credit points of one (1) Major (Study Area A) selected from:
    • Biological Sciences
    • Chemistry
    • Climate Science
    • Earth Science
    • Environmental Science
    • Physics

QUT You: 24 credit points
