What you will learn 

From your very first semester, you'll engage in practical, real‑world learning experiences with our industry and community partners, ensuring you graduate with a portfolio showcasing your first‑hand business expertise. 

Through core business units, you'll develop a strong foundation in critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, business ethics and professional communication - skills that are in high demand. 

In your major, you will: 

  • Explore the fundamentals of finance, financial management, investment analysis and risk management. 

  • Build understanding of financial systems, institutions and instruments. 

  • Develop knowledge in capital planning, funds acquisition, stockbroking and investment management. 

  • Apply your learning through hands-on experiences such as capital investment appraisal, firm valuation, portfolio allocation and risk management. 

  • Gain investment experience managing a real portfolio in the QUT Student Managed Investment Fund elective units. 

  • Work collaboratively in your final year capstone unit to analyse a real company’s corporate finance challenges, develop tailored recommendations and present your findings as a professional pitch. 

  • Acquire practical skills in budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting. 

  • Learn about the key elements of global financial markets such as fixed income, equity, derivatives and foreign exchange, and the products, participants and practices that shape them. 

  • Combine computer coding and quantitative data skills to learn how large funds manage investment savings. 

  • Access financial data from Bloomberg, a leading provider to top financial institutions worldwide, in our Economics and Finance Bloomberg Lab, enabling you to apply classroom theories to real-world financial analysis. 

In addition, our WIL program offers internship opportunities with leading organisations, helping you build valuable professional networks and gain practical industry experience.
